Simply sitting for long periods can result in feelings of tightness in the hamstrings which are two-joint muscles, extending the hip and flexing the knee (they also assist in the rotation of the hip and knee) so whilst the muscles are lengthened over the posterior hip in sitting, they are shortened where they cross the posterior knee. Less active or older clients may also have shortened hamstrings and may experience ‘tightness’ when attempting activities that require both hip flexion with knee extension, such as bending down to put socks and shoes on. This may be the result of client’s standing with slightly flexed knees, a common postural change as we age.
Active and sports people regularly come in with the feelings of tightness in those muscles primarily used in their sport that require strong knee flexion. For example, gym goers, cyclists, rowers and runners, are all at risk of developing ‘tight’ hamstrings, as all activities lend to a tendency for this muscle group to shorten in this way.
In nearly all cases we see, we are able over a course of sessions assist in returning hamstrings to normal function using advanced massage and neuromuscular techniques. Often we have to integrate treating other muscle groups and areas to bring balance to the whole limb and associated body areas to achieve improved body function.
